Job Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering, the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Engineer will work with all of the engineering disciplines, product management, V&V, supply chain, and other groups within FLIR to develop and deliver best in class aircraft and aircraft accessories to market.

Doing this will involve technical know how in the area of drone flight dynamics and flight control, mechanical, electrical, RF and software design.  It will also require great communication and inter-personal skills as you will have to discuss and negotiate product requirements with product management, and work with the engineering team on what those requirements mean for each discipline.  You will have to have great problem-solving skills to deal with the inevitable problems that come up with flying robots.  And lastly, you will have to be able to work independently and be organized to ensure you keep all engineering disciplines unblocked by giving them the technical input and direction they need to complete the project.

Scope of work will be varied pending on the projects being worked on, but will include development of next generation aircraft and aircraft capabilities, and development of various aircraft accessories such as tethers, payloads, launch and recovery boxes, etc.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work with product management to understand and help define requirements for new products
  • Develop the architecture for new features / products
  • Work with electrical, RF, mechanical, software, and V&V teams to ensure the proposed design will handle the product requirements and KPIs
  • Provide inputs to project manager to build overall schedule
  • Meet with vendors to understand and drive roadmap of sensors and other components necessary for aircraft systems and features we are building or are interested in
  • Ensure designs meet requirements for quality and manufacturability
     

Job Qualifications:

  • MASc, BASc, BS in Systems / Computer / Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or related field
  • 10+ years of experience working with a cross functional team on product development that includes mechanical, electrical and software components
  • Experience designing and building unmanned aerial systems
  • Excellent communication and organization skills
  • The ability to take initiative and work independently on projects
  • Knowledge of robotic kinematics and control
  • Experience in flight control software and / or aerial kinematics an asset
  • Eligible to be certified to examine, possess and transfer items under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and legally authorized to work in Canada
